Reroot STEM, Inc. is a nonprofit organization committed to challenging the leaky pipeline in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) by targeting the root of the problem. Our team, comprised of passionate scientists and educators, is dedicated to fostering a love for STEM among young aspiring scientists across diverse identities. Together, we aim to foster a love of STEM as well as demystifying various career paths and trajectories in STEM.
We host free virtual workshops for students worldwide, create and share resources tailored for young scientists, and build a supportive community that nurtures a sense of belonging in STEM regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, geographical region, age, or sexual orientation. Our mission is to reroot STEM at its core, creating an inclusive environment that inspires the next generation of scientists and dismantles barriers to entry in STEM fields.
10 Reasons Why Reroot STEM Works
Reason #1: Inclusive Approach
Statistics consistently show underrepresentation of certain demographic groups, particularly women and minorities, in STEM fields. Reroot STEM integrates diversity and inclusivity into its curriculum. By creating an inclusive space to encourage and support individuals from all backgrounds, Reroot STEM ensures that individuals, regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, geographical region, age, or sexual orientation, feel welcome and supported in pursuing STEM careers.
Reason #2: Early Intervention & Sustained Engagement
The leaky pipeline in STEM refers to the significant drop in the number of individuals pursuing STEM careers as they progress through educational and professional levels. Reroot STEM intervenes early in students’ educational journey, cultivating and sustaining interest in STEM from a young age. Further, Reroot STEM maintains connections with workshop alumni, creating a network of support that extends beyond the duration of the workshops and throughout their STEM journey.
Reason #3: Research-based Curriculum
Reroot STEM’s curriculum is informed by evidence-based research on effective STEM education strategies, ensuring that its workshops align with the latest educational insights and best practices.
Reason #4: Interactive Learning Environment
Reroot STEM designs its workshops and resources to be interactive and engaging, promoting hands-on learning experiences that enhance understanding and retention of information. In addition to technical knowledge, Reroot STEM provides practical tools that empower the students in their STEM pursuits, such as critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving.
Reason #5: Flexible Learning Models & Tailored Curriculum
Every workshop hosted by Reroot STEM is unique, personalized specifically to the cohort of students in attendance. Reroot STEM also recognizes the diverse age groups it serves and tailors its resources and workshops to be age-appropriate, ensuring that the educational content resonates with and engages students at various developmental stages.
Reason #6: Holistic Support
The importance of a supportive community in overcoming challenges cannot be overstated. Reroot STEM not only provides educational resources, but also builds a community that offers mentorship, creating a holistic approach to fostering success in STEM.
Reason #7: Diverse Role Models
The lack of role models can limit the aspirations of young individuals. Reroot STEM connects students with scientists from diverse fields and backgrounds, creating a safe space for them to share their experiences and advice.
Reason #8: Career Path Exploration
Reroot STEM actively demystifies career paths and trajectories within STEM, helping students identify areas of interest and align their educational pursuits with their long-term career goals.
Reason #9: Advocacy for Change
Reroot STEM is a catalyst for change. Systemic barriers, including bias and discrimination, hinder the progress of individuals in STEM. By advocating for diversity and inclusion in STEM, Reroot STEM actively contributes to challenging and dismantling systemic barriers.
Reason #10: Global Accessibility & Impact
Students from underprivileged backgrounds often face challenges in accessing resources and opportunities in STEM. Reroot STEM’s provision of free virtual workshops and resources helps bridge this gap, ensuring that all students across the world have access to valuable information and mentorship. Addressing the need for inclusive STEM education and support on an international scale, Reroot STEM is creating a more robust and innovative STEM community with far-reaching economic and technological impacts.
